"Influence is about being genuine." - Johnny Hunt.
EP 276
This episode was sparked by both my own experiences and a bit of frustration over how many potential guests approach the process. Being a guest is a fantastic way to expand your audience, but only if you approach it with the right mindset—one of genuine connection rather than self-promotion. It’s about building relationships, not just checking boxes.
One of the key takeaways from this episode is the importance of being genuine when reaching out to podcast hosts. Don’t just cold-email hosts, offering to speak about a laundry list of topics. Instead, take the time to engage with them on social media, share their content, and make your interest in their show authentic. If you’ve built some rapport and then approach them with a tailored pitch—explaining why a particular topic would be valuable for their listeners—you’re far more likely to get a positive response.
I shared a reality check on the current podcast landscape, with around 250,000 active podcasts in the market. While that might sound like a lot, the competition among guests is fierce. Many hosts, myself included, often delete cold guest pitches that come off as spammy. The most successful pitches are those that show an understanding of the podcast’s audience and are tailored to offer a specific, relevant topic. Remember, a confused mind says no—so keep your pitch focused and clear.
When it comes time for the actual recording, showing up prepared is key. I provided some practical tips to ensure you come across professionally, such as using headphones, minimizing background noise, and bringing in soft furnishings to improve audio quality. Even if you don’t have a professional studio setup, there are easy ways to make sure your recording sounds great. These details show the host that you value their time and the quality of their podcast.
After the recording, your work isn’t over. Sharing the episode with your own audience is not only a courtesy—it’s a strategic move that benefits both you and the host. Many guests miss this crucial step, but promoting the episode on your social media and website helps establish your authority and shows your followers that you’re active and in demand. Plus, it builds goodwill with the host, increasing the chances of being invited back or getting recommended for other opportunities.
In the end, it’s all about quality over quantity. Rather than trying to be on as many podcasts as possible, focus on a few shows where you can really add value. Build relationships with hosts, deliver a great interview, and then continue to nurture those connections. This approach will yield far better results for your business and brand than taking a scattergun approach. So, take a thoughtful approach to guesting, and it can truly become a powerful tool in your business growth toolkit.
