Listen to Mindest & Action
"If you think good design is expensive you should see the cost of bad design " - Dr. Ralf Speth
EP 299
When it comes to productivity, our environment plays a huge role in how we feel and how much we get done. In this episode of the Mindset & Action Podcast, I was joined by interior designer Holly Scott to talk all about creating a workspace that boosts productivity. Holly has an incredible background in design, from window dressing at Harrods to working with Ralph Lauren, and now she helps homeowners create spaces that truly feel like home. With more of us working from home than ever, we delved into the key elements of a productive workspace.
One of the biggest things Holly highlighted was lighting. Natural light is ideal for any workspace, but if you’re in a darker room or working from a corner, there are ways to improve your lighting. Holly recommends layering different types of light—ambient lighting to set the mood, task lighting to keep your desk well-lit, and even statement lighting to bring personality to your space. She also pointed out that the type of bulb you use matters—warm white bulbs are much more inviting than harsh, clinical ones.
Another crucial factor is storage. Clutter can be a major distraction, and Holly emphasised the importance of having enough hidden storage to keep things organised. Instead of using traditional office furniture, she suggests getting creative—using a stylish cabinet, repurposing a wardrobe, or even using decorative boxes to keep things tidy. Open shelving can be great for displaying personal touches, like plants or awards, but keeping unnecessary paperwork and supplies out of sight can make a big difference in focus and mental clarity.
Colour was another big talking point. Holly explained that the colours in our workspace impact our mood and energy levels. Blues and greens are fantastic for productivity and creating a calming atmosphere, while grey can actually be quite draining. She also suggested using colour-blocking techniques to define a workspace, even if you don’t have a dedicated office. If painting isn’t an option, adding colour through artwork, rugs, and accessories can still make a big impact.
Beyond workspace design, Holly and I also chatted about productivity hacks and planning. She shared that using ChatGPT for content creation has been a game-changer for her, helping her write social media posts and newsletters more efficiently. She also tracks her business growth with a monthly goal sheet, which helps her stay focused and reflect on what’s working. We talked about how important it is to take a moment each month to check in with your progress—something I also encourage through CEO power hours in my own business.
Finally, we touched on mindset, and Holly shared how self-doubt can creep in, even when you’re confident in your expertise. She reminded us of the importance of reading through testimonials and client feedback as a way to boost confidence. It’s easy to forget the impact we have when we’re caught up in daily tasks, but taking a step back to see the transformation we bring to others is so powerful. If you’re looking to refresh your workspace and boost your productivity, Holly has a free home office design guide packed with tips, so be sure to check that out!
