In this episode, I’m flying solo to share a very personal part of my health and mindset journey. If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll know I’ve been focused of my health for a few years. My weight has been a challenge that started in my teens, and I’ve tried every diet under the sun. From Slimming World to the Cambridge diet, I've done it all. But one thing that I’ve learned, especially in the past few years, is that weight loss isn’t just about eating less and moving more. It’s about your mindset and understanding what’s really going on inside your body.
After some recent weight gain for no apparent reason and feeling like if I cut out anything else I'd never eat again I recently, I decided to take a deeper look into my health by working with a nutritionist, Julie Clark, and undergoing various tests. It became clear to me that I couldn’t do anything else to try to lose weight without first understanding what my body actually needed. One of the most revealing tests we did was the Dutch test, which showed that my hormone levels were completely out of balance. In fact, my Oestrogen was sky-high, and my progesterone was far too low, putting me back into a sort of hormonal "puberty." This explained a lot of the mood swings and skin issues I’d been experiencing. So it's so much more than just a weight issue and working with a nutritionist doesn't have to be for weight loss.
Aside from hormones, we also tested my minerals, DNA, and microbiome. The results were shocking but so important. For instance, my adrenals are in survival mode, meaning my body has been under constant stress for a long time. This chronic stress affects everything, from my energy levels to my ability to lose weight. My gut health also showed low diversity, which means it isn’t digesting food as effectively as it could be. Without knowing any of this, no amount of dieting or exercise would have been truly effective in getting me healthier.
What I really want to drive home here is that understanding your body’s needs goes beyond the surface level. It’s not enough to just count calories or hit the gym harder. In fact for me hitting the gym harder could cause more damage. You need to get a clear picture of what’s happening inside. For me, this has been life-changing because it’s allowing me to approach my health in a way that’s sustainable. I’m not just throwing darts in the dark, hoping something will work. Instead, I’m making informed choices that suit my body’s specific needs.
As business owners and often as parents, we tend to put ourselves at the bottom of the priority list. But your health is critical to being able to show up in your business and personal life. If you’re feeling off—whether it’s low energy, mood swings, or just not feeling like yourself—it’s worth investing in tests like these. They’re not cheap, but when I consider how much I’ve spent on gym memberships, diet plans, and failed attempts at weight loss, it’s clear that this is money well spent. It’s about getting to the root of the problem rather than applying band-aid solutions.
