"If you want to change your life, learn to show up as yourself" - unknown.
EP 283
In this episode, I was joined by the wonderful Vivienne Joy to explore what it means to truly "show up" for ourselves. We often hesitate to fully engage in our lives and businesses because of a lingering shyness or fear of judgment. Vivienne dives into this notion, explaining that this resistance usually stems from our inner child—a part of us that holds onto fears from our younger years. This discussion resonated deeply with me because so many of us struggle to step forward confidently and embrace the unique qualities we bring to the table.
Vivienne explains that this fear isn't from our adult selves, who have goals and desires to achieve; it’s from our inner child, who’s often scared of being judged or laughed at. She uses a personal example about freezing up during times tables in school—a memory that many of us can likely relate to! This fear of visibility often translates into our adult lives, where we shy away from opportunities to be seen or heard. The inner child remembers these painful moments and recoils, causing us to hesitate even when we want to push forward in our businesses.
One fascinating point Vivienne shared is the idea of an "outer child." This part of ourselves steps up to protect the vulnerable inner child but can sometimes go overboard, becoming bombastic or even arrogant. This tension can create inner conflict, where one part of us wants to be visible while another holds back. Balancing these voices and recognising their roles can help us move forward more confidently, showing up authentically rather than with a mask of false bravado.
A powerful story Vivienne shared was about a speaker who, when facing a large audience, admitted she was scared. This vulnerability helped her connect with the audience on a real, human level. It reminded me of the importance of letting our true selves be seen. As Vivienne rightly points out, when we aren’t authentic, any positive feedback feels hollow because we know it isn’t directed at the real us. This can lead to a sense of loneliness, even when surrounded by others.
The conversation also touched on the cultural tendencies to hide emotions, like crying. Some people feel comfortable expressing their emotions openly, while others shy away, fearing they’ll be seen as weak or unprofessional. Embracing these emotional displays can actually be empowering, as it encourages others to feel safe showing their own vulnerability. For those in business, this ability to show genuine emotion can foster stronger connections with clients and colleagues alike.
In wrapping up, Vivienne reminds us that true success in business and life comes when we fully embrace ourselves. When we hide behind personas or mask our real feelings, we’re unable to truly connect with others. Embracing our true selves—and all our quirks and vulnerabilities—allows us to build meaningful relationships and makes us feel truly valued for who we are. This episode is a reminder that showing up authentically isn’t just beneficial; it’s essential for real growth and connection.
