Listen to Mindest & Action
"You don’t have to overcomplicate it. Start with what you’ve got" - Donna Eade
EP 310
This week’s episode was a very special one, as I stepped into the hot seat for the fifth episode of our live podcast event series. I was interviewed by the lovely Catherine Chapman, co-host of the Far Too Fabulous podcast, and we dug into my personal podcasting journey, from why I started to what keeps me going five years later. It was such a joy to reflect on how far the Mindset & Action Podcast has come, and share some of the behind-the-scenes truth about what it’s taken to get here.
I spoke about how my podcasting journey began not from a place of strategy, but from a deep need to feel heard. Growing up, I often felt like my voice didn’t matter. But I’ve always loved to talk (I was the classic chatterbox at school!) and when podcasting became more accessible, it felt like the perfect fit for me. I launched my first podcast, aimed at UK wedding vendors, in April 2020, brilliant timing, I know. Despite the chaos of that year, I knew I needed a pillar piece of content, and since writing blogs wasn’t my thing and video felt like too much faff, podcasting was it.
During the chat, we also talked about why podcasting has such an edge over other types of content. It's flexible, easy to consume, and builds a deeper connection with your audience. There’s something so intimate about being in someone’s ears week after week—it creates a trust that blogs and videos can’t quite match. And let’s be honest, most of us would rather pop our earbuds in and listen while walking or doing chores than sit down to read a blog post.
We also delved into the practical side of podcasting. I shared my quick start guide in three simple steps: start with what you’ve got (you don’t need fancy gear), be super clear on who you’re talking to, and know your why. Having a clear purpose makes it easier to stay consistent and not get bogged down with download numbers or social media vanity metrics. Podcasting is a long game, and clarity really does make all the difference.
Another key takeaway from our conversation was the importance of getting help and having a proper launch plan. When I launched my first podcast, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, and it showed. But now, I teach others to do it differently, using a launch plan that gives their show momentum from day one. I’ve seen clients chart in the Apple Podcast rankings in their first week, and it’s all down to launching with intention and strategy.
Finally, we touched on keeping things real. I’m not about hyper-polished, over-edited content. I like podcasts that sound like real conversations. That said, good sound quality is essential. You don’t have to be perfect, but you do need to be listenable. Whether it’s through your branding, your intro, or dynamic content to promote your offers, your podcast can and should be a brilliant extension of your business. So if you’re sitting on the fence about starting one, take this as your sign: your voice matters, and there’s someone out there who needs to hear it.
