Listen to Mindest & Action
"“There is nobody else that does you other than you " - Janine Coney
EP 309
In this special live edition of the Mindset & Action Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the fabulous Janine Coney at my in-person event earlier this April. This was part of our on-stage podcast series, and what a conversation it was! Janine has built a huge following on Instagram—something I initially thought I wanted, until she shared the behind-the-scenes story that made me rethink everything. We unpacked the difference between building an audience and building the right audience, and why numbers don’t always translate into business success.
Janine shared her journey from working in marketing and events to pivoting into image consultancy after the loss of her parents. During that transition, she naturally started posting online and gained a massive following through consistent, authentic content. But as her work evolved, she realised that the followers she had gained weren’t aligned with her new direction—they were following her influencer content, not seeking her expertise as a coach and consultant. That pivot meant letting go of followers, but it was necessary to attract the clients who truly needed her help.
One of the biggest takeaways from our chat was the importance of building your audience intentionally. Janine reminded us that it’s about quality over quantity—you want to attract people who are likely to buy from you, not just boost your follower count. She highlighted the need to speak directly to your ideal client and to show up as your authentic self, rather than trying to blend in with the latest trends or mimic what others are doing. Her message was clear: your uniqueness is your superpower, and you should be leaning into it.
We also talked about where your audience is hanging out. Janine, who had been firmly rooted on Instagram, has recently made a conscious shift to focus more on LinkedIn, where her ideal clients are now spending time. It’s a great reminder that the platform we like might not always be the one that serves our business best. Rather than spreading ourselves thin across every social media site, we should be strategic and intentional—go where your clients are, not just where you feel comfortable.
When it comes to what to post, Janine had some fab advice: don’t just sell, tell stories. Share your journey, talk about the challenges you’ve overcome, and show the transformation you help others achieve. People connect with people, not products. That means opening up (once you’re through the messy middle), sharing your wins, and yes—blowing your own trumpet. If you’re not telling people how brilliant you are, who will?
We wrapped up with some brilliant action steps: check your feed—is it clear what you do? Post consistently in a way that works for you, and ditch those boring bios! Show people how you help them move from A to B. This episode is packed with gems, so if you’re navigating the world of social media and want to build an audience that actually drives your business forward, go give it a listen. And thank you again to Janine for sharing so openly—it was a joy to have her on the stage!
