EP 293
Hello, lovely listeners! This week on the Mindset & Action Podcast, I tackled a topic we’ve all struggled with: how to approach goal-setting in a way that works for us instead of against us. By January’s third week, most New Year’s resolutions are out the window, but instead of feeling defeated, this episode explored how to approach goals with intention and sustainability. With insights from guest speaker Jenni Donato at one of my recent networking meetings, I’m sharing why resolutions often fail and how to reframe your mindset to set yourself up for long-term success.
Jenni started with a simple but powerful suggestion—ditch New Year’s resolutions. Why? Because these resolutions often set us up for failure by starting at the finish line. We make bold declarations like “I’ll lose weight” or “I’ll double my business revenue,” but without an actionable plan or a gradual approach, the sheer pressure leads to burnout. Instead, Jenny recommends focusing on where you want to be by the end of the year and mapping out small, incremental steps to get there. This way, we create habits that stick, which I couldn’t agree with more!
One of Jenny’s standout tips is choosing a Word of the Year. For me, my word is “balance.” This single word acts as a theme for everything I want to achieve in 2025, helping me focus on tangible actions like keeping Fridays free from meetings or being out of my office by 6 PM. By identifying small milestones each month, we can build momentum, achieve meaningful progress, and avoid the “all-or-nothing” mindset that so often derails our efforts.
Another practical way to visualise your goals is through a vision board. I shared how creating one last year led to some magical outcomes, like booking my dream trip to Paris. Vision boards serve as a powerful reminder of what we want, and they prompt us to take action. If you’re interested in creating your own, check out my episode with vision board expert Vanessa Buck (linked in the show notes).
Throughout this episode, I also discussed the importance of self-compassion when working towards your goals. The way we talk to ourselves matters! Your brain believes what you tell it, so ask yourself empowering questions like, “What did I do today to help myself tomorrow?” rather than focusing on perceived failures. Reframing your thoughts can make all the difference in keeping your motivation alive.
Finally, I shared my thoughts on why January is such a tough month for change. Let’s face it—starting the year during cold, grey winter days isn’t ideal. Personally, I think March would be a much better starting point! But until we can rewrite the calendar, adopting a gentler, more flexible approach to goal-setting can help us navigate these challenging weeks and stay aligned with our vision.
Let me know what you think of these ideas, and share your own approach to goal-setting in the comments or over in the Facebook group. Don’t forget to grab your ticket for the Mindset & Action Live event on April 3rd—I can’t wait to meet you in person!
