"Comparing yourself to others is just a mental habit ." - Aili Kuutan.
EP 273
In episode 273 of the Mindset & Action Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Janine Coney, a personal brand strategist, marketing and business coach, who works with female founders and CEOs. We focused this mini mindset Monday on Janine's biggest block "comparisonitis." Janine shared how comparing yourself to others can stifle growth and how important it is to recognise your own path and stay true to it.
One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the concept of resilience. Janine mentioned that even though she's been in business for a while, she still faces moments of self-doubt triggered by comparison. However, she’s learned to manage it by staying focused on her own work and not letting others’ successes distract her. This is something we can all relate to, especially in the age of social media, where it's so easy to get lost in a scroll and feel like we're not doing enough..
What I loved most about our chat was Janine’s advice on dealing with these moments. Her number one tip? Stop looking at others! It sounds simple, but it's a crucial step. She reminded us that while competitor research is important for business, constantly absorbing what others are doing can lead to unnecessary self-criticism and take the joy out of what we're building ourselves. This is a reminder to stay in your lane and focus on what makes your business unique.
Janine also touched on the value of remembering our own achievements and skills. We often forget how far we've come because we're so focused on what’s next. Taking time to reflect on your journey and appreciating your progress is a powerful antidote to comparison. As she put it, "self-love, self-appreciation, and self-gratitude are game changers." This is something I echo wholeheartedly in my own coaching and in this podcast.
Interestingly, Janine shared that she’s come to embrace situations where she might encounter competitors, even in real-life networking events. Her outlook has shifted from feeling uncomfortable to realising there’s enough space for everyone in the industry. It’s a beautiful reminder that collaboration, not competition, should be at the heart of our work as entrepreneurs.
We wrapped up with Janine sharing some fantastic insights for listeners dealing with comparisonitis. Whether it's stepping away from social media, remembering your own brilliance, or understanding that your journey is your own, her advice was spot on. If you’ve been feeling stuck in comparison lately, this episode is for you! Don’t forget to check out our full conversation about branding in the next episode, where Janine shares even more valuable tips.
