"The key to Time Management is to see the value in every moment" - Bryant McGill

Rethinking Time Management as the Year Ends
As we edge closer to the new year, it’s natural to reflect on our goals and routines. In this episode of the Mindset & Action Podcast, I wanted to build on Monday's conversation with Viv about time management by offering practical advice you can use as we move into 2025. I know many of you may set your goals in December, but let’s be real—implementing them in the cold, gloomy months can be a challenge. That’s why I’m focusing on strategies to help you stay productive and motivated even when January feels a bit overwhelming.
Start With a Time Audit
The first step to improving your time management is knowing exactly where your time goes. This means doing a time audit—spend a day or two tracking every single task you do. You can use a simple notebook and pen or apps like Toggl. The key is to identify where you’re spending your time efficiently and where you might be wasting it. This audit will provide insights that help you prioritise better, cut down on unnecessary tasks, and focus on what truly matters.
The 80/20 Rule and Eliminating Time-Wasters
Viv’s mention of the Pareto Principle (or the 80/20 rule) during our previous episode really resonates here: 20% of your efforts lead to 80% of your results. By identifying the activities that truly drive your business forward—like client acquisition or project development—you can spend more time on them and delegate or automate less impactful tasks. For instance, hiring a virtual assistant to manage your email inbox can save hours of your time, allowing you to focus on high-value activities.
Batching for Efficiency
I can’t stress enough how life-changing batching tasks can be. When you group similar tasks—like recording multiple podcast episodes in one session—you minimise the setup and transition time, making your workflow much more efficient. Whether it’s creating social media content, writing emails, or working on client projects, batching allows you to stay in the zone and get more done in less time.
Tackling Procrastination Head-On
Procrastination is something we all face, and I’ve certainly been there! The key is understanding why it happens. Is it fear, perfectionism, or overwhelm holding you back? Once you pinpoint the root cause, you can address it—whether that’s by breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks or simply committing to five minutes of effort to get started. Sometimes, taking that small first step is all it takes to build momentum.
Set Realistic Goals and Protect Your Energy
Finally, as you set your goals for 2025, keep them realistic. Push yourself just outside your comfort zone, but don’t set unattainable targets that leave you feeling defeated. Remember to schedule CEO time—dedicated blocks in your calendar to review your progress, adjust your plans, and ensure you’re on track. Protecting your energy, especially for my fellow introverts and neurodiverse friends, is also crucial. Work with your natural rhythms and give yourself permission to rest when needed.
Let’s set ourselves up for success in 2025! Take time to reflect on what worked this year and make a plan for moving forward. And don’t forget to celebrate your wins—big or small. You’ve got this! Stay tuned for next week’s episode, where we’ll dive into personal finance with the wonderful Diane Watson.
