"Your Brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room." - Jeff Bezos.
EP 274
In the latest episode of the Mindset & Action podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Janine Coney, a personal brand strategist and business coach, who shared invaluable insights on building a powerful personal brand. We’ve been talking a lot about visibility on the show lately, so Janine's expertise in this area was perfect for today's discussion. Visibility, as we both agreed, is key in business—especially for solo entrepreneurs who are essentially the face of their brand.
Janine made a great point about how personal and business brands often overlap, but they’re not always the same thing. Your personal brand is about you—your values, personality, and how you present yourself to the world. On the other hand, your business brand includes elements like your logo, colours, and fonts, which are all used to represent your company. However, the two need to align, particularly if you’re a solo entrepreneur selling services, where people are essentially buying into you as a person.
We also touched on the importance of making your personal brand visible. In the small business world, especially for solo entrepreneurs, people connect with the person behind the business before making a purchase. If you’ve been hiding behind your business brand and not putting yourself out there, Janine suggests taking a step back and making sure that your personal brand is well-represented. People like to know who they’re buying from, and showing your true self helps build trust and authenticity with your audience.
Another big topic we discussed was the importance of aligning your personal brand with your business brand. For example, Janine spoke about how her brand palette includes red, a colour she wears often because it represents her bold, vibrant personality. But what if your brand colours don’t suit you personally? No problem! Janine reassures us that we don’t have to dress in our brand colours every day. Instead, we can find complementary shades or bring brand colours into our photoshoots and marketing materials in other ways, such as through accessories or stationery.
Finally, Janine emphasised the value of doing foundational work when it comes to personal branding. It’s crucial to be clear about your core values, your story, and what makes you unique. If you’re planning to grow your team, having these elements in place will help you attract people who align with your vision and can help move your business forward. Authenticity is key—there’s no point in creating a brand that doesn’t reflect who you are, as it will only lead to disappointment for both you and your clients.
In conclusion, this episode was packed with actionable tips on how to merge your personal and business brands, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints. If you’re feeling unseen in your business, now is the time to start working on that personal brand. As Janine said, people buy from people—so make sure your audience sees the real you!
