"Words have meaning names have POWER" - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr
EP 295
Choosing the right name for your podcast is a crucial step in setting yourself up for success. It’s the first impression potential listeners get, and it needs to be clear, engaging, and aligned with what your show is about. In this episode, I shared my own journey of podcast naming, including some of the mistakes I made along the way, so you don’t have to! From avoiding vague titles to considering SEO, I break down everything you need to know to pick the perfect name for your podcast—or any other brand you’re building.
One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was how easy it is to misstep when naming a podcast. My first podcast name was based on my business name, which seemed logical at the time. However, it led to confusion, making people think the podcast was only for my clients. Later, when my business shifted, the podcast name no longer fit. This experience taught me that your podcast name should be broad enough to grow with you but specific enough that potential listeners immediately know what they’re getting.
A strong podcast name should be clear, easy to remember, and relevant to your audience. You also want to think about how it looks visually. Podcast cover art is small, so a name with long, complicated words can be difficult to read. Keeping it simple helps with branding and makes it easier for people to recall and search for. Speaking of search, SEO is a massive factor! Podcast directories work like search engines, so having keywords in your title can significantly impact your discoverability. That’s why I eventually tweaked my podcast name to include “A Business Podcast” in the title—to help listeners find it when searching for business-related shows.
Another big consideration is avoiding common mistakes, like using your own name unless you already have a well-known personal brand. While celebrities can get away with it, most of us need a name that clearly conveys our topic to new listeners. Similarly, using symbols—like the ampersand I originally included in my title—can make it harder for people to find your podcast when typing it into search bars. I’ve since learned that clarity always wins over cleverness when it comes to naming your show.
Before locking in a name, research is key. Check podcast directories to make sure there isn’t already a show with the same name. While trademarking might not be necessary for every podcast, it’s essential to verify that your chosen name isn’t already legally owned by someone else. The last thing you want is to grow your podcast only to be forced to rebrand down the line. And if you’re unsure, ask your audience! Running a quick poll on social media with a few name options can give you great insight into what resonates with your ideal listeners.
To help you brainstorm the perfect podcast name, I’ve put together a free guided worksheet, which you can grab at donnaeade.com/whatname. It walks you through key considerations and helps you narrow down a name that fits your vision. And if you’re ready to take podcasting seriously, my eight-week group program is always open for enrolment, with a self-study option launching soon! Naming your podcast is just the beginning—getting it launched and working for your business is where the real magic happens.
