PODCAST LIVE:Protecting Your Financial Future, Diane Watson | EP311
"A man’s not a plan. You need to make sure that you sort your stuff out." - Diane Watson.
EP 311
In this episode of the Mindset & Action Podcast, I wrapped up my live event series with a powerful and necessary conversation with the brilliant Diane Watson. Many of you loved hearing from her back in December, and it was a joy to welcome her back to the stage. Diane has a long-standing career as a financial advisor and a deep passion for helping women become financially secure. Her work through her initiative, She Can Prosper, is a rallying cry for women to take control of their finances before life throws them a curveball.
We kicked off our chat talking about the gaps and vulnerabilities women face when it comes to money, particularly as more of us run our own businesses. Diane shared the heart-wrenching story of a woman named Pam, who lost everything because she didn’t know her legal standing as a cohabitee. It’s stories like this that fuel Diane’s mission to educate women about the financial realities they often overlook. For me, this sits firmly in the mindset pillar of my podcast because how we think and feel about money often dictates how we act, or don’t act, on securing our futures.

A big part of our conversation focused on the blind spots many of us have as entrepreneurs. It’s easy to get wrapped up in income and expenses, but what about protecting ourselves if we can’t work? What happens to our businesses, our families, or our homes if illness strikes? Diane pointed out that one in two of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime. That statistic alone made me stop and think. It's uncomfortable to consider, but essential if we want to build sustainable businesses and lives.
We also talked about wills, powers of attorney, and other tools many of us avoid until it’s too late. Diane highlighted how few people, especially parents, actually have these documents in place, and the potential chaos that can follow if something goes wrong. It’s not just about what happens after death, but also who can make decisions for you if you're unable to do so. These aren’t glamorous topics, but they are the backbone of real financial security. I was reminded that avoiding the conversation doesn’t make the risks go away, it just leaves us unprepared.

Diane also tackled the myth that you need to be good at maths to manage your money. She’s living proof that understanding finances doesn’t require you to be a numbers whiz. It just takes a willingness to learn and take action. Her advice was practical: start small, be consistent, and don’t wait for a better time. Whether it's building a pension, taking out life insurance, or simply tracking your spending, doing something is better than doing nothing. And the stories she shared, both cautionary and hopeful, really drove that point home.
I left this episode feeling motivated to revisit some of my own financial to-dos, and I hope you will too. The truth is, none of us know what’s around the corner. So let this be your nudge to have those conversations, book that meeting, and start putting your plans in place. Massive thanks to Diane for joining me and sharing her wisdom with such clarity and compassion. Let’s all be the women who sort our stuff out, because a man is not a plan and our futures are worth protecting.
Bye For Now!
